Virtual Case 1 Description

Virtual Case 1 is a case using Excel.  (View the Excel Introduction video if you need extra help with Excel).

First, create a Google web site (or other site if you prefer… the tutorial video will show you Google).  Make sure your name, photo, brief resume and Career Statement are on the page.

[Note:  It is not required for you to list your email or phone number on your resume or anywhere on this public web page.  It is recommended that you DO NOT.]

You need to demonstrate that you know how to calculate a class grade in Excel.  You do this by posting a spreadsheet showing made-up example grades to your web page.  You also need to post evidence that your formulas in your Excel page are correct..  On the grades calculation sheet, your example score for VC2 is the last two digits of your znumber (e.g., my z number, z035098, means for this example I would enter a “98” for my example VC2 score).  All other numbers can be made up.  You must have at least nine students (made up) other than yourself also on the sheet.  So ten total students, including you.

FERPA Requirements:  Occasionally people stumble upon these assignment pages and believe we are posting student grades by name, which is NOT allowed under FERPA (“Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act”).  We need to let people know the data is made up for assignment purposes.  You MUST have a line somewhere reading “The data contained on this page is entirely made up, and is being used for assignment purposes.  No actual student data is being used and no student’s privacy has been compromised”.  Also, you are using your own real name, but please append “-Madeup” to your last name.  Thus, I would appear as Chuck Downing-Madeup, my last name showing as “Downing-Madeup”.

Here are 2 videos showing how to complete VC1:

If you have a web site that you made using a different service, that is OK, but please tell me here.

Here’s the point breakdown for VC1:

VC1 is a 100 point assignment.

10 points off:  For EACH week past the original deadline that your VC is posted late.  Since the TA grades Virtual Cases at the deadline shown on our online Course Schedule, if you are late finishing a VC, you must send an email to the TA giving notification when you complete it, and that is the date/time used to determine your point deduction.  If you do not send a notification to the TA via email, you will get a 0 on the Virtual Case.

0 points off:  page is creative, attractive, PERFECT both aesthetically and functionally.

5 points off:  at the TA’s discretion for poor layout, color scheme, etc.  Basically if it’s hard to read, doesn’t line up or something.

10 points off:  for missing picture and/or resume.

20 points off:  You do not add the FERPA line or you do not append “-Madeup” to your last name.

50 points off, each:  Missing Grades Excel page or missing Formulas Excel page.  (Note:  The video suggests these be posted to your web page as pictures of the Excel page).

Up to 20 points off:  OMIS 351 grade calculator numbers are incorrect.

Up to 20 points off:  OMIS 351 grade calculator formulas are incorrect.
